Packing for Storage
Packing for moving and packing for storage are similar processes, but with very different goals in mind. You’ll benefit from using some different strategies if you’re packing your items for long term storage vs. packing them for short term transportation. With that in mind, here are some tips and hints for preparing your items for your new storage unit!
Have A Plan and Keep Organized!
Having a few things figured out ahead of time will not only help you to choose the correct storage unit size for your needs, but will also help you to maximize that space once you’ve got it. Being prepared will also make the process smoother and make your life easier during the process!
- Figure out what you plan to put into storage. Start the process with a complete list of the items that you hope to fit into your unit.
- Once you’ve got your list, break it down further – determine which items are particularly heavy and which items are fragile. This will not only help you to keep your fragile items safe, but will also help you to use your storage space more efficiently by stacking lighter, more fragile items on top of heavier, more sturdy items.
- Organize your list further by separating items that you don’t expect you will need regularly from items that you may have to access more often. Determining this ahead of time will help you to pack your unit accordingly, and prevent you from realizing later that your more regularly-used items are all the way in the back corner.
- Label your boxes on every side. This way you won’t have to worry about making certain a particular side is facing outwards when you pack your unit.
- Always keep an up to date list of everything that you have stored in your unit. This will keep you from searching for an item in your closet if it’s actually in your storage unit and vice versa.
Size is Important – Get the Right Unit For You
Of course you don’t want to pay for more storage space than you need, but finding out that the unit you’ve chosen isn’t going to meet your needs could end up being even more troublesome in the long run. Remember that a little extra space can make your storage unit far easier to work with, especially if you plan on accessing it on a regular basis. At McGhee Self Storage we’ll be glad to help you determine what solution will best meet your financial and storage needs.
Invest in Quality Supplies
Being willing to spend a little money on sturdy boxes and quality packing supplies may save you far more by more effectively preserving your valuables. Remember that sturdy boxes will be far less likely to collapse over time, and will be far easier to move around and re-pack when you need to access the items in your unit. Dust covers for your furniture and bags for your mattresses will help maintain the quality of larger items that will be in storage for the long term.
